Septic Systems

We have been advised by the Montgomery County Environmental Health that residents need to be aware of the following:

Please be sure that your aerobic system is under contract to be inspected three (3) times a year. This annual contract is a TCEQ (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality) requirement and must be updated with the County Health Department. If you do not have a contract with someone that is certified with your system, you could receive a fine from Montgomery County Environmental Health Department for up to $500.00 per day. The POA and county have received numerous complaints of systems operating improperly during the day, alarms going off, and downright smelly systems. These are all a nuisance and health hazard. Please be advised that the health department, not the POA, is the governing authority, and they are reviewing annual contracts; performing inspections on those that are not in compliance; and imposing fines for those not in compliance.

You as a home-owner are responsible to ensure chlorine tablets are put in your system, by you or your inspector. Systems should be checked weekly for chlorine tablets. No tablets means no disinfection of what is being sprayed on your yard. There is no magical device underground to make the water safe. It needs chlorine.

Did you remember to reset the timer inside your septic control box after we lose electric power? If not, your septic may be watering your yard at inappropriate times.

Your neighbor or kids may not like the surprise of having your septic sprinkler spraying just before dinner. Please set your timers to only spray late at night, when we are all inside, and sound asleep. Remember, there is high voltage inside those boxes too. If you are not sure what to do, simply call your septic maintainer for assistance. You can also contact the county health department with any questions or report a violation.
